A man of no regrets: Song Seung Heon

The Korean heartthrob talks about his time-travelling drama, co-actresses and ideal partner

Thoughtful and sincere in conversation, Korean actor Song Seung Heon is what we'd call a man with a good head on his shoulders. Despite being one of the hottest Hallyu commodities around, Seung Heon does not try hard to upkeep with the image of a pristine and perfect man coiffed for Hallyu icons. He acknowledges his flaws and knows his shortcomings, and that, perhaps, is the reason why he feels more endearing in person than on TV.

While most actors, singers and idols strive to become multi-hyphenates and excel in all aspects of showbiz today, Seung Heon's steering clear of the singer route.

'Many have suggested this [doing a music album after singing for Dr. Jin] to me - but I don't sing well,' he wryly mused. 'This was all made possible with the advanced technology which helped with the audio sound (chuckles). I'm not very confident with my vocals.'

Indeed. More popularly known for his melodramatic roles than for his voice, the 36-year-old catapulted to instant - and global - fame with the tearjerker series Autumn in My Heart. The woeful and self-sacrificial role left such an indelible impression in viewers' hearts that he has been affixed with the Mr. Nice Guy label ever since.

Professing his desire to play 'killer and psycho' roles in future at the press conference for Dr. Jin, Seung Heon's attempts to flesh out his different sides on screen can be seen with his recent projects: 2011's rom-com vehicle, My Princess and a time-travelling gig in 2012's period drama, Dr. Jin.

When we raised the possibility of traveling back in time to return to his 21-year-old self, Seung Heon shared that he would like to 'fully experience student life' again. 'I didn't get a chance to try out activities like going on group dates or playing with my friends due to my early start in acting during University.'

Though he laments at the lack of such memories and sometimes fantasises about pursuing a professional career in sports - soccer and golf, he says - Seung Heon will never trade his acting job for anything else in the world.

'Forward thinker' is how this 36-year-old prefers to describe himself, during our interview at ME@OUE, a new posh eatery in town. 'I'm not one who regrets and I'm satisfied with my achievements right now. While Dr. Jin is a time-travelling vehicle that tends to trigger a lot of what-if questions if we return into time, I'm a sort of person who prefers to look towards the future instead.'

Citing melodrama as his preferred drama genre, Seung Heon's latest venture When a Man Loves co-starring up-and-coming actress Shin Se Kyung, Yeon Woo Jin and Chae Jung An will put him back in his comfort zone.

With his well-maintained dreamboat good looks, Seung Heon has been romancing younger actresses on TV these days: Park Min Young (27 years old) in Dr. Jin and Se Kyung (23 years old) in When a Man Loves. The actor concedes to feeling the heat and need to maintain his body and looks in order to match up to these younger starlets but reasons that it's a 'good form of pressure' for him.

So do any of his co-actresses fit the bill of his ideal partner?

'If I really had to choose it'd be Song Hye Gyo and Kim Tae Hee, but I don't have any special feelings towards them,' shared the currently-single bachelor who also called 'inner beauty' the most important criteria on his list.

'There's no particular type of girl that catches my attention. I may have focused more on looks when I was under 30 but now the focus is on inner beauty,' he shared. 'My seniors and friends have also agreed with me and told me that it's most important to find someone who can really click with me.'

“很多人建议我出专辑（听了我唱仁医插曲之后），但我唱的并不好”，他自嘲地笑着说。“那是全靠现代录音技术（笑）。我对我的歌喉非常没自信”。

的确，比起歌喉，他更为人熟知的是他塑造的荧屏角色。通过演绎如催泪剧“秋天的童话”中催人泪下的深情人物，这位36岁的演员俘获了无数观众的心。从此被打上了“好好先生”的标签。

在“仁医”的媒体见面会上，宋承宪表示将来有机会的话想演“杀人犯和变态狂”。 近来这几年他也通过出演不同剧目展示了不同的面貌，如2011的浪漫喜剧“我的公主”和2012的年代穿越剧“仁医”。

当被问到如果能穿越回到21岁想做什么时，宋承宪回答“想重新充分享受学生生活”。“因为在大学期间就开始了演艺活动，没有能够参加像集体约会这样的活动和跟朋友们痛快的玩。

尽管遗憾没有多彩学生生活的回忆，有时也会梦想做职业运动员—踢足球、打高尔夫，他表示不会用世界上任何职业来换他的演艺生涯。

在城中一个新的时髦餐厅ME@OUE进行的采访中，这位36岁的演员谈到自己是个往前看的人。 “我是个不后悔的人，对目前自己的成就很满意。“仁医”这样的穿越剧很容易引起“如果再来一遍该会怎样”这样的遐想，但我是更愿意期待未来的那类人。

宋承宪表示剧情剧是他偏爱的类型。最近接演的“男人恋爱时”又让他回到驾轻就熟的戏路。这次他将与新生代女 演员申世京以及延宇振、蔡贞安合作。

保持着迷人外表的宋承宪这些年来在荧屏上一直与年轻的女演员们谈情说爱：“仁医”中的朴敏英（27岁），“男人恋爱时”中的申世京（23岁）。他坦承与年轻女演员配戏感觉有压力，但这压力是鞭策他保持体型和外貌的“好压力”。

那么，这些与他合作的女演员中有没有符合他的理想型的呢 ?

“非要选的话，宋慧乔和金泰希比较符合。但我对她们没有什么特别感觉。”这位单身贵族表示 他更注重“内在美”。

“并没有特定哪种类型的女子会引起我的注意。30岁之前也许会比较在意外貌，但现在我更注重内涵。我的前辈和朋友们都跟我说两个人是否合拍，那才是最重要的。”

Actor Song Seung Heon is back in Singapore once again to promote drama ‘Time Slip Dr. Jin’, which is scheduled to broadcast in April on Channel U. Greeting the media in English with a dashing smile, Song Seung Heon shares his thoughts on the drama, fellow actors and more in the press conference held on Friday afternoon .

Question: This is the first time you have acted in a time-travelling drama. What were your thoughts when you first heard about the offer?

Song Seung Heon: As it was my first time playing a role in a period drama where my character time travels to the past, I do feel pressured. However, even though my character was in the Joseon era, my role does not require me to speak in period language so it wasn’t all that stressful.

Question: Since Time Slip Dr. Jin is a time-travel and period drama, what kind of special preparation did you do for the role?

Song Seung Heon: No matter what, it was my first time acting as a doctor, so I’ve had difficulties with the medical terms. At first I was merely memorizing all the medical terms, with a professional helping me with them. But after a while, I had gotten used to it, became better with both enacting the surgical scenes and reciting the medical terms. The staff members like to joke that I could be a real doctor now.

Question: What were some of the memorable, interesting instances in the drama?

Song Seung Heon: I think it’s very interesting having the chance to delve into the Joseon history and to understand the historical figures. While shooting for this drama, I’ve always wondered how is it like to really time travel to the past to meet them and to live in that time period. It is a brand new experience for me each time I step onto the set.

Question: Since the role in this drama requires quite a bit of medical knowledge, did you specially learn all the medical terms and the surgical procedures from a professional doctor?

Song Seung Heon: This drama is very realistic and uses real surgical equipment. And because it’s so realistic, the props at the scene like the dissection of the various body parts could make some people uncomfortable. I was uncomfortable initially but after a while, I got used to it and felt neutral about them.

Question: For this drama, you’ve worked with great actors like Lee Bum Soo, Park Min Young and even Kim Jae Joong. Can you share your experience working with them?

Song Seung Heon: Firstly, I’ve known Lee Bum Soo for 10 years plus, and I’ve learnt a lot from him. He is an experienced actor that really knows how to flesh out a character and bring it to life, and I could see his passion in acting. Park Min Young and Kim Jae Joong are relatively new actors, but both are very hardworking. Especially Park Min Young – even though she looks really feminine and gentle, I was initially worried whether she could do well in her role. However, my worries were unfounded as she worked really hard and did well. For Kim Jae Joong, as he is an idol from JYJ, many people thought that he didn’t know how to act, but he really put in a lot of effort and did well too.

Question: You’ve participated in the OST for this drama and have gotten good comments. Have you thought of becoming a singer and releasing an album?

Song Seung Heon: Quite a few people have mentioned this to me, but I don’t think I did well. It was the audio technology that helped. I’m not confident in singing. I don’t think I’ll become a singer or release an album, but I do think that singing an OST for a drama I’m in is meaningful, so if there are similar chances in the future, I’ll do it again.

Question: If you could go back in time, which time period would you go?

Song Seung Heon: Many people wish to have this chance to time travel to a period they want, including me. I’d like to go back in time to see historical figures or go to the future to see my old(er) self. However, if there is only one chance to time travel, I would want to go back to my school days to revisit my friends and the life back then. I’d probably reconsider many choices too, including my career choice as an actor.

Question: What was the most interesting episode you had while filming for Time Slip Dr. Jin?

Song Seung Heon: Well, the filming was done back in summer and we had to wear very thick clothes and wigs. Thus, whenever we go for breaks, Park Min Young, Kim Jae Joong and the rest of us will take out the layers of clothing. It’s really tough. If I remember any other interesting episodes that happened, I’d let you know again.

Question: Being in this industry for almost 20 years, what else do you want to try?

Song Seung Heon: I’ve also been asked this many times. There are still a lot of characters I would like to try out. So far most of the roles I’ve played are nice guys fighting for justice and I want to make a 180-degree change and try characters like murderers or psychopaths. I want to try as many roles as possible.

Question: Which one would you choose if you could: 1) Go back in time, sacrifice yourself and be a doctor in the past to pass down present day medical knowledge or 2) Return to the present.

Song Seung Heon: Well, many deaths in the olden times could be avoided with a simple injection in the current times. I feel that it was a shame and I would want to save lives if I could go back. However, I also believe that everything has its own sequence and history is already fixed, so I can’t really change it. There are those that died in the past, but there are also those that are living in the present, and I think I would choose to return to the present.

Question: As an actor, your schedule is undeniably very packed. How do you spend your time outside your schedule and what do you do during your spare time for leisure?

Song Seung Heon: I am pretty much like every other normal people. If I’ve got the time, I’ll go and have fun. I’ll meet up with junior-high and high school friends to drink and since we’ve got sports as a common hobby, we’ll hang out to play golf. Sometimes I would just relax at home and watch some DVDs on my own.

In Singapore to promote 'Dr Jin', one of his recent dramas, Song Seung Heon attended a media conference to share his thoughts and filming experiences a day prior to the Meet & Greet session with the public and fans. Not an unfamiliar face to the Korean drama fanatics, Song Seung Heon has participated in numerous drama works since his debut as an actor. Aside from 'Dr Jin', some of his highly popular dramas include 'Autumn in My Heart', 'East of Eden', 'My Princess', just to name a few. With 'Dr Jin' set to premiere in Singapore on Channel U from 1st April onwards, let's hear what the actor has got to say about this drama.

Q: Understanding that 'Dr Jin' is your first Sageuk (historical/period) drama, what was your initial reaction when you discovered that you'll be leading the title role in the drama?
SSH: Since this was my first Sageuk drama, I was actually quite pressurized initially. Nonetheless, even though the drama role that I played encounters time travel, I speak in a modern way so I guess that felt less stressful.

Q: The drama setting of 'Dr Jin' was about travelling back in time to the Joseon Dynasty. How did you mentally prepare for this role?
SSH: My role in 'Dr Jin' is a doctor and to be honest, the professional medical terms are very difficult for me to remember so I had to memorize them. They even invited a doctor to come down to the drama set to help me along with the terms. After filming for a period of time, I got quite used to the terms and there are even people joking that I can be a real doctor now.

Q: Are there any interesting incidents that took place during filming?
SSH: Because this drama experiences time travel, I find it fascinating to act in such a drama for the first time. Occasionally, I do think about how life would be like and how I would feel if I really were to return to the Joseon Dynasty. The filming process was refreshing and interesting to me.

Q: Any feelings to share with regards to working with co-actors like Park Min Young, Lee Beom Soo and Kim Jae Joong in the drama?
SSH: I have known Lee Beom Soo sunbae-nim for over 10 years. He is a qualified actor and I have since learned a lot from him. It was a good experience on the overall. Park Min Young on the other hand, was worried about whether she would be able to deliver her role well. She worked very hard and surprised everyone with her good performance. For Kim Jae Joong, it was my first time working with him in a drama. Because he is from JYJ, an idol group, people think that he can only sing and can't act well. In fact, he acts in a very professional manner and always does his best during each filming. He worked as hard as every actor on the set.


Q: Having participated in one OST (original sound track) for 'Dr Jin', will you ever consider coming out with an album of your own?
SSH: Many people have actually asked me the same question. It's not that I can sing well but rather, it's because of the advanced technology that helps to correct the tunes and make the audio track sound better. I personally don't think that I'm a good singer, so the chances of me venturing out into singing is quite impossible. Nonetheless, be it drama or movie, being able to participate in the sound track is very meaningful to me. Hopefully I will receive such chances again in the future.

Q: If you could return to the past, which era or generation would you want to go back to?
SSH: I've always wished that I could go back to the past and meet historical people, or see how I would be like when I grow old. However, if I can really time travel, I would like to return to my high school days as a student. If it does happens, then I would really reconsider my career path again.

Q: Which episode in 'Dr Jin' is the most interesting one to you?
SSH: There is no particular episode that I felt was most interesting. What was unforgettable would probably be the hot weather during filming which drained away all our energy. It was so humid that even Park Min Young and Kim Jae Joong couldn't take the heat as well, so we ended up taking off the thick layers of Joseon Dynasty clothes we had to wear.

Q: You've came a long way in terms of your acting career since debut. Is there anything else you would like to give a try?
SSH: I want to challenge myself with a variety of drama roles. Most of my drama characters are either too nice or too gentle, so I hope to tackle something really different and opposite, like an evil guy who commits murderous crimes, or a bizarre role who doesn't have a sound mind. Even though at the moment there is no such opportunity yet, I am willing to take on any character and challenge myself.

Q: Amidst your busy schedule, do you take time off for your personal life? What do you usually do during your free time?
SSH: Just like you or any normal person out there, I catch up with friends and we often go for a drink or exercise together. Sometimes I play the golf, and sometimes I enjoy resting at home catching up on movies.
